Because Where You Stay is Part of the Experience, Agriturismo

Updated: Jun 13

Staying in an agriturismo in the Pisan Hills can give your vacation a special flair. It’s much more intimate than staying at a hotel, it allows you to sample local wine and food made fresh everyday by true locals that live and breathe the area, gives you an insider look into running such facilities and allows you to meet other guests touring the area. Most of them have great amenities like pools, beautiful courtyards and grounds, as well as fantastic views. They can also sometimes be much more cost effective then staying at a hotel, in both rates but also other things like including free parking or meals and tastings.

In this post I will highlight just three of many that I think are worth your booking. More will come in future posts.

First, my personal favorite vineyard, Fattoria Fibbiano has apartment style rooms for their overnight guests. Their vineyard is one of the more well-known in the area with many local restaurants offering their delicious wines on the menu. But what makes this place special for me, is the family and staff that run and work there. Warm, friendly people that want to make sure your visit, no matter if just for a tasting or staying there, is memorable. The rooms are spacious, air-conditioned and have all the furnishings you need for a comfortable stay. Fattoria Fibbiano has two beautiful courtyards where you can have your tasting, a meal or just sit, relax and enjoy a bottle of wine. There is also a pool offering views of the valley below and a playground for kids to enjoy. And did I mention the two adorable golden retrievers that are there to welcome guests!

Next, we have Badia di Morrona and their very unique and special accommodations. Perfect for parties of all sizes, this vineyard offers restored homes that use to belong to the local farmers and have been transformed into beautiful villas. Each different in style and of different sizes, ranging from a party of four up to 20. Each have their own pool, courtyard terrace for dining al fresco, and some have BBQ and pizza ovens. When you stay here, it feels like your staying at a close friends house. Nothing is too big of an ask for the owners and staff. The grounds are beautiful and their wine and olive oil are delectable.

And finally, another favorite, we go south to the Volterra area for Agriturismo Santa Vittoria. This beautiful property offers 8 apartment style rooms each fully equipped. What I love about this beautiful property, besides it’s proximity to one of my favorite towns in Tuscany (Volterra) is all the amazing experiences they offer. You can do a cooking class and pick your own vegetables from their farm, you can fish at a nearby lake, you can ride horseback through the wooded areas... I can go on and on. Also, Mamma Maria is always there cooking up delicious meals and the hotel staff is so very friendly and accommodating, ready to help with any request or give recommendations. Another “it factor” here are the views of beautiful, green, rolling Tuscan hills that go one forever, absolutely breathtaking. Now, I will say that while the grounds have a pool to cool off in the summer, the rooms do not have air conditioning. That can be a deal breaker for some, but the nightly breeze being up on the hill and provided fans can help compensate.

I hope this gave you a good starting point when considering what kind of experience you want from your accommodations in the Pisan Hills. There are many different options, from vacation rentals to inns, chain hotels, boutique hotels and agriturismos. We will continue to explore these options through our posts and make recommendations, but it’s always up to the traveler to decide on which of the options best suits their needs and provides the type of stay they’re looking for during their special time here.
